Living Between Two Worlds

Book by Joel S. Goldsmith

… You have a household; you have a family; you have friends.  It would be ludicrous for you to talk to them about the God you believe in, the God you are convinced of, until you have discovered the way to bring the activity of God into your individual experience.  Then you would not have to tell them about it. They would see it.  That is why, when you really experience God, you do not have to advertise or proselyte; you merely have to be, and you will soon discover that those you are seeking that level of life will find you.  Otherwise you will have many heartaches by giving your “pearls” to the unprepared thought and having them thrown back at you. (Chapter: “The Nature of Spiritual Attainment” 20)

Any time we are confronted with appearances that we do not understand, we must stop for a moment, pause, close our eyes, if possible, and be receptive as if we were listening. Then, in place of the sick or the sinning person, we will hear the Voice say, “‘ This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.’ Neither do I condemn him,” and neither will we.

The ability to move from the world of material sense into the world of spiritual discernment is proportionate to our ability to close our eyes to the appearance and wait for that inner intuition, the voice of God, to reveal to us the truth of what we are beholding.

It is as simple as that, and it is as difficult as that: difficult because we have been born and brought up with the idea of looking right at the appearance and then with our so-called human cleverness calling it good or evil and congratulating ourselves on what expert psychologists we are.

In facing the temptation that there is an external power, let us go back instantly and realize that Consciousness is the basic substance, cause, and law of all creation.  All creation manifests the qualities, character, and nature of Consciousness.  Spiritual discernment demands that instead of judging and arriving at an opinion, we close our eyes to the appearance, open our ears, and let God bear witness with our spirit. Then the spiritual truth behind the appearance will be made evident to us. (Chapter: “The World of Material Sense and the World of Spiritual Discernment” 64)

Our greatest give to this world is not our personal service to our family. Our greatest value is the measure in which we can sit still and be such a clear transparency that God’s love can flow into our household, business and nation. This is impersonalizing love, and it is that impersonal love that meets the need individually and collectively.

On some levels of human life, a person should humanly be very loving, charitable, and benevolent, because that is his only access to peace and harmony. As he gives, so does he receive. As he sows, so does he reap – but not at the spiritual level. At that level, the highest spiritual level is divine love, and this is not a love that you or I can give or withhold. This is something that flows through us and it works itself out on the human level.

Make a practice once a day of sitting quietly and giving no human love to anyone, but, on the other hand, having no negative emotions: not hate, envy, jealousy, malice, revenge, or indifference. Do not have these, and do not have any desire to love anybody. Sit quietly for a moment and let the Spirit of God, divine love, flow through your consciousness to your household, to your family, to the neighbors, to the city, the state, the community, the nation and finally the world.

“Thy grace is the sufficiency of this world. Let Thy grace be upon the world and be realized in all human consciousness. Let Thy grace be established on earth as it is in heaven.”

Then be silent for a few moments while the Spirit flows. You have given no love; you have withheld no love; you have not been unloving: you have merely been still, and you have let the still small Voice be heard throughout all human consciousness.

All attempts to benefit “the natural man” by spiritual means must fail. Spiritual healing does not mean trying to bring the power of God to a human being; it does not mean trying to bring the infinite riches of God to a poor mortal; it does not mean making of God an employment agency or a marriage counselor. It means giving up the personal sense of self and letting it “die” rather than trying to bring God’s grace to it; it means that the son of man must “die”, so that the son of God can be raised up in place of that son of man, and out of that “death” a resurrection can take place. Then we no longer have material health or material wealth: we have spiritual grace, and we discover that it is literally true that God’s grace is our sufficiency.

We hasten the day of our death to personal sense and our resurrection to our divine sonship as we consciously remember not to judge by appearances, by what we see, hear, taste, touch, and smell, but that we are to be still and let this inner wisdom reveal to us what is before us. Then in that moment of silence when all judgment ceases, the inner wisdom says, “This is My beloved child in whom I am well pleased. This is thy brother, this is thy sister. This is thy Selfhood in another form.”

The moment judgment enters thought, remember that word I and smile to yourself. You have momentarily allowed the personal sense of I to come in, but then, as you pause for a moment the real “I” that you are takes over and reveals truth.

There is an old saying that when the student is ready the teacher will appear. Too many believe that this means when the student is ready some human teacher is going to come along to instruct him. It really does not mean that at all. There are far too few real spiritual teachers in the world, and these few humanly could not possibly reach all those who are seeking.

The statement means that when we in our hearts and souls desire to know God aright, to receive God’s grace, to be freed of our sins, false appetites, hates, enmities, jealousies, and other human traits, when we are really ready to be made spiritually whole, the teacher will appear. It may be a teacher ten thousand miles away sitting in meditation who knows nothing about us personally and of whom we know nothing personally, and yet we receive our grace and our freedom. There is nothing personal in the spiritual kingdom, so we may never know the teacher who reached us, and the teacher may never know us or know that we were reached by his meditation. It is entirely the activity of God-consciousness.
