The good is oft interred with their bones.

How much evil can a man do? How much evil can a man be?
After all has been said . . . and done — in the final analysis — can a human being truly be evil?
Here is an episode from the public radio program TTBOOK (To The Best Of Our Knowledge) about the late Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein and the relationships he developed with the U.S. military men who acted as his prison guards up to the point of Saddam’s execution. One of those guards was Private First Class Adam Rogerson, a young soldier from Ohio.
A decade after Saddam’s execution, TTBOOK producer Charles Monroe-Kane sat down with Rogerson to find out what it was like guarding Saddam Hussein. Through the interview, the TTBOOK program tackles the questions raised in this blog. (Click the photograph below to listen to the program episode at the TTBOOK website.)
- How can someone be a monster — a brutal dictator, a mass murderer, a serial killer — and up close seem like a decent, caring person? In this hour, we tackle a complicated question: what happens when our moral categories fail and we find ourselves feeling empathy for monsters? Is that wrong? And what does it say about us? (TTBOOK: Can An Evil Man Be A Decent Person?)
